I have curly hair. A LOT of curly hair. For years I fought and tortured my curls. I permed it (worst decision ever). I chopped it (which resulted in an interesting triangle look). I chemically straightened it (eventually creating a freaky curly on top / straight on the bottom look when my natural hair grew in). When I finally embraced my curls, it was freeing and I began to truly love my hair.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Lorraine Massey of CurlyWorld – guru of all things curly – on her line of gluten-free curly hair products. Not only are they gluten-free, but they’re also free from sulfates, silicone, parabens, mineral oil, and synthetic fragrances. Read on to learn more. Your curls will thank you!

Lorraine Massey is the author of Curly Girl: The Handbook, founder of Devachan Salons, and co-founder of DevaCurl products. She now works independently, teaching the Curl by Curl cutting technique and leading the movement to more natural hair care products with the launch of her new company, CurlyWorld.

But let’s get down to brass tacks: Lorraine Massey is a goddess who’s curly hair products are life changing! I discovered Lorraine’s DevaCurl hair products from my fab “curly cut” hairdresser. DevaCurl was a serious game changer and my curls never looked better. Unfortunately, my skin wasn’t looking so great as I began developing rashes on various parts of my body. After ruling out other causes, I realized that DevaCurl contained gluten in the form of wheat and hops. And we all know that gluten is off limits for those of us with Celiac Disease, gluten sensitivity, or gluten intolerance.

So I quit my DevaCurl products cold turkey and it was torture. I began the painful process of trying every gluten-free curly product known to man, woman, and child. And my curls weren’t cooperating.

Then I heard the amazing news that Lorraine Massey had launched a new product line. And it was gloriously gluten-free. My hair and I may have shed a tear or two of happiness.

I recently had the pleasure of learning more about Lorraine’s CurlyWorld gluten-free shampoo, conditioners, and gel.

Hold the Gluten’s Question: Lorraine Massey’s DevaCurl product line is phenomenal for curly hair everywhere. What inspired her to create CurlyWorld?

Lorraine’s Answer: Yes, the DevaCurl line was a phenomena for curly hair and I am proud of the purity and message of what it once was. However, when something grows so big, things have to change and the message gets watered down and so do the ingredients. That is what inspired me to create CurlyWorld. I was longing for simplicity. We only need a couple of great mix and match cleansers and conditioning products with quality ingredients. Your curls know what to do and they do not need to be bombarded by an avalanche of products. I didn’t want my curls to feel waxy and weighted down anymore. I wanted them to breathe and be free.

Hold the Gluten’s Question: A large percentage of curly hair products contain gluten, which is off limits to those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Let’s talk about the ingredients CurlyWorld products are “free from”. Why did gluten make the cut?

Lorraine’s Answer: Gluten-free means that my specific product excludes gluten, a protein that is found naturally in wheat, barley, rye, and other grain hybrids. Gluten is widely known to cause health issues for people who suffer from a variety of gluten-related disorders. These include celiac disease, wheat allergies, and dermatitis-to name a few. Suffering from any of those conditions may cause an adverse reaction to any product that contains gluten; not just the food you’re consuming but in daily cosmetics including conditioners and body lotions, as the skin being the largest organ of the body, absorbs everything. The way we remove gluten from CurlyWorld products is through a process called, hydrolization.

Hold the Gluten’s Question: What sets CurlyWorld products apart from curly competitors?

Lorraine’s Answer: We develop each CurlyWorld product with meaningful ingredients from nature, chosen for their effectiveness and safety. I am continually researching to raise the bar to find the perfect balance between what is pure and what is efficacious. My commitment is to inspire and make you fall in love with the hair you are born with by first educating you and providing gluten-free, botanically infused and effective products that deliver a true benefit- as everyone deserves the best. It’s all about helping people better understand what they put
onto their bodies is just as important as what they put into it.

Hold the Gluten’s Question: Have you seen an increase in consumers shopping for gluten-free hair care?

Lorraine’s Answer: Yes, and many are skeptical (I was at first). It seemed like a fad, but when you begin researching, you uncover all the truth behind it. Symptoms can start in the gut and can include inflammation, cramps, irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain, coarse hair, and dry skin- just to name a few. Celiac disease affects millions of people, so why not create a product that can make a day-to-day routine a little bit better?

Hold the Gluten’s Question: Where can CurlyWorld products be purchased?

Lorraine’s Answer: CurlyWorld products can be purchased at my new salon, Spiral (xyz) in New York City and many leading curly salons in the USA, England, and Australia. You can also find the products at www.CurlyWorld.com
